Introduced in 1958, the Gibson ES-335 was designed to bridge the gap between the warm resonance of a hollowbody and the sustain and feedback resistance of a solidbody. Its centre-block construction, double-cutaway design, and twin humbucker layout made it an instant hit with players across genres.
This particular example dates to 1963 and is in excellent overall condition, showing only light signs of natural playwear. The finish has retained its vibrant cherry red hue, with no signs of fading. There are a few minor surface marks on the back and some playwear on the rear of the neck, but nothing that detracts from its feel or appearance.
The neck profile is a typical 1963 taper—starting fairly slim at the first fret (0.79in) and gradually becoming fuller by the 12th fret (0.96in). It feels fast and comfortable without being too thin, and the action is set nice and low for effortless playability up and down the neck. The original frets have plenty of life left.
The pickups are a superbly balanced original pair of Patent Number humbuckers—clear, open and dynamic with the touch sensitivity and harmonic bloom you'd expect from the best early-60s humbuckers. From warm, soulful neck tones to articulate, biting bridge sounds, this one covers a lot of ground and responds beautifully to different amps and playing styles. All electronics are original and all solder joints are intact with no signs of disturbance.
The hardware is all original, including the ABR-1 bridge, stop tailpiece, double ring single line Kluson Deluxe tuners, and reflector cap knobs. The only change is a professionally replaced vintage correct nylon nut. Otherwise, everything is exactly as it left the factory.
Comes with a more recent TKL hard case.
