This example is in exceptional near mint condition. If not for a handful of very fine surface scratches on the pickguard, it could described as mint. The high-gloss black finish, which tends to reveal even the slightest signs of handling, remains clean and blemish free.
This model was inspired by the custom all black D-35 that Martin built for Johnny Cash — a guitar which became an important part of both his sound and “Man in Black” image. Cash used his original extensively for almost two decades, and this commemorative edition was developed with his son, John Carter Cash, as a close recreation of that historic instrument. Each guitar carries an individually numbered interior label signed by John Carter Cash and C.F. Martin IV.
Beneath the black finish is some impressive Martin craftsmanship to be expected, with a solid Engelmann spruce top paired with East Indian rosewood back and sides, including the characteristic three-piece back that defines the D-35. Forward shifted, scalloped ¼" bracing gives the guitar a powerful and responsive tone, with plenty of depth in the bass while retaining the clarity and balance required for both accompaniment and more delicate playing.
The decorative details are tasteful. An abalone rosette, multi line purfling and grained ivoroid binding provide just enough contrast against the black finish, while the bound ebony fingerboard features abalone and mother-of-pearl star inlays together with Johnny Cash’s signature at the final fret. The Modified Low Oval neck profile and 1 11/16" nut width make it a very comfortable guitar to play.
Comes with the original Martin Johnny Cash hard shell case and the original hangtags. A superb example of one of Martin’s most recognisable signature instruments. Beautifully made, visually unmistakable and every bit as appealing as a serious D-35 as it is a piece of Johnny Cash memorabilia.
