The Fender Coronado range of guitars, announced in 1965, was Fender’s first venture into the hollow-body electric guitar market. No doubt wanting a piece of the hollow body electric market dominated by competitors Gibson, Rickenbacker and Gretsch, Fender employed the services of luthier and designer Roger Rossmeisl, who had previously designed guitars for Rickenbacker, to come up with an all new design. The Coronado I, II and XII were initially available in 1966.

This particular Coronado XII dates from 1967 and is finished in Cherry. It has 'Special' stamped on the back of the headstock, which means it started life as either a trade show guitar or an artist endorsee guitar.

The overall condition is very good to excellent with some moderate lacquer checking, a few small nicks, some light surface scratches, a small amount of buckle rash on the back and some natural play wear to the lacquer on the back of the neck around the cowboy chord position. There are no repairs, touch ups or overspray anywhere. See pictures for an accurate indication of overall condition.

At some point the original tuners have been replaced with a set of correct repros but other than this the guitar is completely original.

The pair of DeArmond made Fender branded pick-ups sound bright and chimey which coupled with the 12 string configuration produce a classic electric 12 string jangle. All three pick up positions offer useable variations of the 12 string tone from bright and cutting on the bridge pick-up, a wide range chime on the middle setting and a fuller jangle tone on the neck pick-up. All in all it's not a million miles away from the iconic Rickenbacker 12 string tone.

These Fender Coronados have long been sleepers in the vintage market and are still a bargain price for a Fender guitar from the early CBS era. So grab this great example while prices remain low.

Comes with the original hard shell case.
