We are big fans of P-90 equipped Les Pauls, whether they are Goldtops, Customs, Specials or Juniors. There’s something magical about the combination of vintage voiced P-90’s and the mahogany body and neck, and in the case of the Standard the addition of a maple cap for a bit of added brightness.
This Custom Shop reissue dates from 2009 and is based on the third iteration of the Les Paul Standard – the ’56 spec Goldtop which saw the introduction of an ABR-1 tune-o-matic bridge.
As you’d expect acoustically it has a good natural resonance with a nice mid range ‘honk’ typical of Les Pauls. This character translates well through the pair of P-90’s which have plenty of body and snap. The tonal range can cover a lot of bases from clean Tele like twang, warm soul and woody jazz, to gnarly punky rhythm and screaming lead, all with great nuance and articulation.
Weighing in at 8lb 13oz this is a comfortable weight for a Les Paul, so you could easily play a two hour set with this if you needed to. The neck is a chunky C and is pretty much the same profile as found on many Custom Shop R8 ’58 Les Paul Standard reissues.
The overall condition is excellent to near mint. There is some very light buckle wear and four or five small indentations (see pictures) on the back of the guitar, which are the only things that prevent it from being described as near mint.
These don’t tend to come up for sale that often as they were produced in much lower numbers than the ’58 and ’59 burst reissues so if you’ve been looking for a good Goldtop reissue with P-90’s then this could be the one for you.
Comes with the original Gibson Custom hard shell case along with the Certificate Of Authentication and all of the case candy.
